More pathetic disease mongering by Big Pharma. When meditation on famine, pestilence and "Married with Children" reruns, or vigorous exercise while wearing shoes that are too tight would have the same effect.
Former drug rep here--I'm pro antidepressants--but...pro informed choices---too many dr's don't have the time or choose not too explain all the risks or downfalls of medications to patients. Patients need to research, ask questions and make a choice. Every medication has a benefit and a risk--you HAVE to educate yourself and make a choice. Antidepressants have saved so many lifes as well as enhanced so many lives. Antidepressants may have also caused injuries and death. Announcement: Where to Find the New Carlat Psychiatry Blog
Although I am taking a sabbatical from The Carlat Psychiatry Report and its blog, both publications live on and continue to thrive. The blog has now merged with Steve Balt's Thought Broadcast Blog, and Carlat Publishing now produces three separate continuing education newsletters: The flagship Carlat Psychiatry Report, The Carlat Child Psychiatry Report, and the new Carlat Behavioral Health Report, which focuses on evidence-based psychotherapy. Happy reading!

About Dr. Carlat
I am a psychiatrist in private practice in Newburyport, Massachusetts and an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts Medical School (but note that the opinions expressed in this blog are not those of Tufts). I graduated from the psychiatric residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1995, and am the founder and former editor of The Carlat Psychiatry Report, a monthly CME newsletter. As of March 2012, I have taken an open-ended sabbatical from Carlat Publishing in order to take on a new job as the director of the Pew Prescription Project in Washington DC.

The homeopaths can shake some of this up with water and dilute it until it's all gone: Voila! a new antidepressant with absolutely no adverse effects!
Here's a funny website that demonstrates disease mongering at its extreme. It's for a fictitious drug called Havidol.

Thanks! Perfect for a cold rainy day at the end of a long dreary week! Feeling my perkiness draining away...
Surely this is a joke. Surely. Please tell me this is a joke.
That was from The Onion. Thanks for the laugh.

My favorite line: "...and now my husband and I can spend an evening not talking and watching a TV show neither of us enjoy."
